Internal linking for AI: how to build a link topology that AI models can traverse
Most internal linking guides tell you to link more. This technique tells you to link less, link better, and design the topology as a knowledge graph that signals comprehensive coverage.

Executive summary
Traditional internal linking is built on two assumptions: links pass PageRank, and crawl depth matters. Both assumptions are about Googlebot. AI models do not crawl. They have already ingested your pages during training or retrieve them during search-augmented generation.
What your links do for AI models is different: they signal topical relationships. When page A links to page B with anchor text that explains the connection, the model learns that these two concepts are related, that your site treats them as connected, and that your coverage has depth. That signal is what builds topical authority in AI-mediated discovery.
This technique covers the three topology patterns, the anchor text rules that carry relational context, and the practical method for deciding what to link and where.
Why PageRank-era linking fails for AI
The internal linking advice most sites follow was designed for a specific crawler: Googlebot. The logic is straightforward. Links pass PageRank (so link generously from high-authority pages to pages you want to rank). Crawl depth matters (so keep every page within three clicks of the homepage). Anchor text should contain the target keyword (so Google understands what the destination page is about).
None of these mechanics apply to AI models.
AI models do not compute PageRank. They do not measure crawl depth. They do not treat anchor text as a keyword signal. When ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity process your site, they are not crawling a link graph in real time. They have either ingested your pages during training (the model already has the content) or they retrieve specific pages during search-augmented generation (the model fetches what it needs).
In both cases, the link itself is not a transport mechanism. The model does not need the link to reach the destination page. It already has access. So what does the link do?
It communicates a relationship.
When a page about decision frameworks links to a page about criteria flips with the text “this is the mechanism behind the Criteria Flip, and the decision framework is one of the content types that executes it,” the model learns three things: that these concepts are related, that one is a parent methodology and the other an implementation, and that this site has enough depth to connect them. That relational signal is more valuable to an AI model than any amount of PageRank.
If links are relational signals rather than transport mechanisms, the question changes from “how many links?” to “what relationships are you declaring?”
What links actually signal to AI models
When an AI model processes a page that contains internal links, it extracts two layers of information.
The first layer is topical coverage. A site with ten pages about cybersecurity evaluation, each linking to the others at relevant points, signals that this source covers the topic comprehensively. A site with one page about cybersecurity evaluation and no internal links signals an isolated piece. When the model is choosing which source to cite for a buyer asking “how should I evaluate cybersecurity platforms?”, the site that demonstrates depth through connected pages has an advantage.
The second layer is conceptual structure. The link does not just say “these pages are related.” The anchor text and the surrounding context say how they are related. A link placed at the point where an article discusses elimination risks, pointing to a page about elimination defence content, tells the model that these are two perspectives on the same concept: one diagnostic, one prescriptive. The model can use that relationship when constructing multi-part answers for buyers.
This is the difference between a catalogue and a knowledge graph. A catalogue lists pages. A knowledge graph connects concepts with named relationships. AI models are better at traversing knowledge graphs than catalogues because their architecture is built to process relationships between ideas.
The practical consequence: every internal link you place is a statement about how two pieces of content relate. If you cannot articulate the relationship in the anchor text, the link is not earning its place.
Not all link structures communicate the same thing. The topology you choose determines whether AI models read your site as a collection or a system.
Three topology patterns and what each signals
Most sites use one of three internal link topologies. Each signals something different to an AI model. Understanding the signal helps you choose the right pattern for your content.
Hub-and-spoke
Every page links to a central index. The index links back to every page.
This is the default pattern for most blogs and resource libraries. A “/playbooks” index page lists all playbooks. Each playbook links back to the index in a footer or breadcrumb. The spokes never link to each other.
What AI models read: “This site has a collection of related pages.” The model understands breadth (how many pages exist on this topic) but not depth (how the pages connect to each other). It is the weakest topology for authority signalling because the hub provides no relational context between spokes.
Use when: you genuinely have a flat collection with no sequential or conceptual relationships between pages. A glossary, for example.
Chain
Page A links to page B. Page B links to page C. A linear sequence.
A tutorial series or a multi-part argument. “Start with the market reality report, then read the criteria flip, then the elimination defence series.” Each page has a clear predecessor and successor.
What AI models read: “This site has a sequential argument on this topic.” The model understands that the content builds on itself. It is stronger than hub-and-spoke for authority because it signals structured thinking. The limitation is that it only declares one relationship per page (next/previous), which leaves lateral connections unexpressed.
Use when: your content has a genuine reading order and each piece depends on the previous one. Rare in practice outside of documentation.
Mesh
Pages link to each other wherever the connection is contextually relevant.
A decision frameworks playbook links to the criteria flip playbook at the point where it discusses elevating low-priority criteria. The criteria flip playbook links to the elimination defence playbook at the point where it discusses risk dimensions. The elimination defence playbook links to the direct-answer content playbook at the point where it discusses structuring individual defence pages. No central index required for the connections to exist.
What AI models read: “This site has a connected methodology on this topic, with named relationships between concepts.” The model can traverse the mesh from any entry point and build a complete picture of the subject. This is the topology that most closely resembles how AI models themselves organise knowledge: as a web of related concepts, not a list or a sequence.
Use when: your content forms a system where concepts reinforce each other. This is the target topology for most content libraries that aim to build authority in AI-mediated discovery.
Most sites start with hub-and-spoke because it is the default output of any CMS. The technique is to evolve from hub-and-spoke to mesh without removing the hub. The index page still serves human navigation. But the authority signal comes from the contextual links between pages, not from the index.
The topology is the structure. The anchor text is what fills it with meaning. A link without relational anchor text is a road without a sign.
Anchor text as relational context
In PageRank-era SEO, anchor text was a keyword signal. You linked with the text “cybersecurity evaluation framework” so Google would associate the destination page with that phrase. The practice led to exact-match anchor text everywhere, and Google eventually penalised it.
AI models use anchor text differently. They read it as a description of the relationship between two pages, not as a keyword tag for the destination. This changes what good anchor text looks like.
Weak anchor text
“See our playbook on elimination defence.”
Tells the model: this page links to another page called “elimination defence.” No relational context. The model knows the destination exists but not why it matters here.
Strong anchor text
“This is the mechanism behind what Seedli calls the Criteria Flip, and the decision framework is one of the content types that executes it.”
Tells the model: the criteria flip is a parent methodology. The decision framework is an implementation of it. These two concepts have a specific hierarchical relationship. The model can use this when constructing answers about either concept.
The rule: anchor text should explain the relationship, not name the destination. The destination page title is already in the HTML. What the model needs from the anchor text is the context that explains why these two ideas connect at this specific point in the argument.
Three patterns for relational anchor text:

Concept A is a methodology. Page B is a worked example or a specific application of that methodology. Anchor text: “the direct-answer content structure applies this same principle to individual criterion deep-dives.”

The evidence link
The current page makes a claim. Another page provides the supporting evidence. Anchor text: “the cybersecurity market reality report shows this pattern across 63 buyer scenarios.”

The prerequisite link
The current page assumes knowledge that another page teaches. Anchor text: “this technique builds on the principle that AI models use content to build buying decisions, not to surface the best writing.”
In each pattern, the linked text is short (the destination concept), but the surrounding sentence provides the relational context. The model reads both.
Understanding the theory is useful. Having a repeatable method for every new article is what turns theory into a consistent content practice.
The method: choosing what to link
For every new article, work through this process before publishing. The goal is two to four contextual links to genuinely related pages. Fewer is fine. More than four usually means the article is covering too many topics.

Identify the article’s core concepts
What are the two or three ideas this article teaches? Not the topic in general, but the specific concepts. A playbook on decision frameworks teaches: criteria selection, framework structure, and the authority positioning that comes from publishing evaluation rules. Those are three concepts, each potentially linkable.

Find the existing pages that share a concept
For each core concept, is there an existing page that covers it from a different angle? Criteria selection connects to the criteria flip playbook (same data, different output). Framework structure connects to the direct-answer content playbook (both teach page structure for AI parseability). Authority positioning connects to the content-that-wins insight (the theoretical basis for why frameworks earn citation).

Place the link at the point of highest relevance
Read through the article and find the sentence where the reader would naturally think “how does this connect to...?” That is where the link goes. Not in a sidebar. Not in a footer. At the exact point in the argument where the connection is most useful.

Write the anchor text as a relationship statement
The surrounding sentence should make the link self-explanatory. A reader (or model) should understand the relationship without clicking. If you cannot write a sentence that explains why these two pages are connected at this point, the link is not earning its place. Remove it.

The technique so far has been about what to do. Knowing what not to do is equally important, because the wrong linking pattern actively undermines the signal.
What not to do
Some internal linking practices that are harmless for Google are actively counterproductive for AI authority signalling. These are the patterns to stop.
Do not link everything to everything
If every page links to every other page, the model cannot distinguish which connections matter. The topology becomes noise. Selective linking is stronger than comprehensive linking because it declares that some relationships are more important than others. That selectivity is itself a signal of editorial judgement, which AI models associate with authoritative sources.
Do not use “click here” or “read more” anchor text
These carry zero relational context. The model learns nothing about the connection between pages. Every link is an opportunity to declare a relationship. Generic anchor text wastes that opportunity.
Do not add “Related reading” footers as a substitute for contextual links
A footer list says “these are loosely associated.” A mid-paragraph link says “these are specifically related at this point in the argument.” The footer link is not wrong, but if it is the only internal linking on the page, the model reads a catalogue rather than a knowledge graph. Footer lists serve human navigation. Contextual links serve AI comprehension. Both can coexist, but the contextual links are the ones that build authority.
Do not repeat the same link multiple times in one article
One contextual link at the right point is sufficient. Linking to the same destination three times does not triple the signal. It dilutes the specificity of the connection by suggesting the relationship applies everywhere rather than at a particular point in the argument.
The underlying principle is restraint. Fewer links with higher relational quality produce a cleaner topology than many links with generic context. The content library that links selectively, with explained relationships, at contextually relevant points, signals to AI models that the author understands how the ideas connect. That understanding is what the model associates with authority.
The reason competitors are unlikely to adopt this technique quickly is that it requires thinking about content as a system, not as individual pages. Most content teams optimise page by page. This technique optimises the connections between pages, which requires understanding the full architecture before adding a single link. That structural thinking is the competitive advantage.
The technique gives you the method. A link map gives you the system for maintaining that method across every article you publish.
The link map: managing your topology
A content library with four articles can hold its link topology in the author’s head. A growing library cannot. At some point between five and ten articles, the topology becomes too complex to manage by memory. Links get duplicated, orphans appear, and the relational structure that signals authority starts to drift.
The solution is a link map: a spreadsheet that records every internal link, the section it lives in, the relationship it declares, and a strength score that captures how essential the connection is. The map is not documentation for its own sake. It is the tool that turns the linking method from a per-article practice into a system-level discipline.
What the map records
Each row represents one directional link. The columns capture: source article, the section within that article where the link appears, a relation strength score (1 to 5, where 5 is an essential connection and 3 is the minimum worth maintaining), the destination article, the relationship type (implementation, evidence, or prerequisite), and the anchor text. The section column matters because it ties the link to a specific argument, not just a page. If the section changes, you know to revisit the link.

Notice the mix. Strength-5 links connect parent methodologies to their implementations and worked examples to their playbooks. Strength-3 links connect articles that share a concept but serve different stages or audiences. Both are worth maintaining, but if you need to remove a link to stay under the per-page limit, strength 3 goes first.
How to maintain the map
Update on every publish. Before a new article goes live, scan the map for existing articles that share a concept. Add two to four outbound links from the new article, and check whether the new article deserves inbound links from existing pages. Record every new link in the map with its section, strength, and type.
Check the orphan column. Any article with zero inbound links is invisible to the mesh. The model can find the page individually but cannot traverse to it from the rest of the library. If an article has been live for more than a week with no inbound links, find the strongest conceptual connection in an existing article and add one.
Cap inbound links per page. Three to four inbound links per article is the practical ceiling. More than that dilutes the signal. When a new link would push an article over the limit, check the strength scores. If the weakest existing inbound is strength 3, remove it from the source page and replace it with the new, stronger connection.
Review quarterly. As the library grows, some early links will weaken. A link that was strength 4 when it was the only connection between two topics might drop to strength 2 when a more direct article fills the gap. Remove the weaker link. The goal is not to accumulate links but to maintain the highest-quality mesh the library supports.
The map turns internal linking from an afterthought into an editorial process. The topology becomes something you design, not something that happens to you. That intentionality is visible in the output, and AI models respond to it.
