What a Customer Proof Study is
A Customer Proof Study is not a traditional case study. A traditional case study tells a story: who the client is, what problem they had, how you solved it, what happened next. It is a narrative, closer to the trust story format than to what we build here. The reader follows a journey and arrives at a conclusion.
A proof study inverts that structure. The conclusion is the first sentence. The number is the headline. The rest of the piece exists to make that number credible and citable, by connecting it to a specific buyer concern that AI models are actively weighing when they decide whether to recommend you.
This matters because AI models do not read stories the way people do. When ChatGPT or Gemini evaluates whether to recommend a brand, it looks for evidence: quantified outcomes, named clients, specific claims that can be cited in a response. A narrative case study buries that evidence in paragraphs of context. A proof study puts it where the model can find it, in the headline, the opening paragraph, and the structured data points throughout.
The result is content that serves two audiences at once: buyers who want to know “can this company actually deliver on what they promise?” and AI models that need citable evidence before they will recommend you on a specific criterion.
A proof study and a trust story both use client outcomes. The difference determines which one you build.
Proof study vs. trust story
Both content types draw on client relationships and real outcomes. But they serve different stages of the buyer journey, target different signals in the Seedli data, and are structured differently. Choosing the wrong one wastes the client’s time and yours.
Customer Proof Study
Leads with: The outcome number. First sentence, first paragraph.
Targets: A single decision criterion or elimination trigger from the Seedli data.

Leads with: The client’s situation. The reader enters the story and follows it.
Targets: Broad credibility and trust signals across all stages.
Serves: All five stages. A trust story is evidence at any point in the journey.
Triggered by: Trust risk, citation gaps, early-stage brands building a broad evidence base.
Length: 2,000 to 4,000 words. Long-form narrative with room for context and emotion.
Not every client outcome is worth a proof study. Here is how to tell when the Seedli data is calling for one.
When the data calls for proof
A proof study targets a specific gap in your AI positioning. The Content Plan in Seedli identifies these gaps automatically, but understanding the underlying signals helps you prioritise which client outcomes to document first.
Signal 1: Elimination trigger on a criterion you actually deliver on
Open your Content Plan and look for entries triggered by elimination exposure (ET). If AI models are filtering your brand out on a criterion where you have real client results, that is a proof study waiting to happen. The model is not wrong about the criterion; it is wrong about your evidence. The proof study corrects the record. (If the gap is about how the criterion is framed rather than missing evidence, an elimination defence page may be the better first move.)
Signal 2: Win criterion gap with no quantified content
Look at your criteria win rates in Consideration → Tradeoffs. If you score well on a criterion but your published content has no quantified outcomes for it, AI models are drawing on generic descriptions rather than evidence. A proof study gives them the specific numbers they can cite.
Signal 3: Decision share below evaluation share
If your brand appears in AI evaluations but loses at the decision stage, the model considers you but does not commit. That gap is often caused by missing proof: the model has enough to include you in a comparison, but not enough to recommend you as the choice. Proof studies close that gap by providing the evidence the model needs to make a confident recommendation.

A proof study is built on two types of data: the Seedli intelligence that tells you what criterion to target and what buyers are asking, and the client outcome that provides the evidence. Here is what to extract from Seedli before the client interview.
The target criterion and its buyer language

What to extract: The criterion name, its buyer importance rating, your brand’s win rate on it, and the buyer questions listed underneath. These buyer questions are how AI models frame the criterion when advising buyers. Your proof study needs to answer at least one of them directly.
Why it matters: The buyer question becomes the framing for your proof study. If the question is “Can we quantify the impact on pipeline velocity?” then your proof study headline is a quantified answer to that exact question.
The elimination trigger or hesitation signal
Content Plan → find the case_study entry → read the brief
What to extract: The specific elimination trigger or hesitation signal the brief references. This is the objection your proof study needs to neutralise. If the trigger is “Insufficient evidence of measurable ROI,” every structural decision in your proof study should serve that: headline with ROI numbers, opening paragraph with the timeframe, client quote about measurable impact.
Why it matters: A proof study without a target reads as a generic case study. The elimination trigger gives it surgical precision. You are not telling a success story; you are providing the exact evidence an AI model needs to stop filtering your brand out on this criterion.
The competitive context
Consideration → Tradeoffs → Provider Competitive Profile
What to extract: Your brand’s score vs. market average on the target criterion. Also check whether competitors have published quantified outcomes for the same criterion. If they have, your proof study needs to match or exceed that evidence quality. If they have not, you are creating the first citable evidence in the market, which is a stronger position.
Why it matters: AI models compare evidence across brands. If your competitor has a published proof point and you do not, the model defaults to theirs. This data tells you whether you are filling an empty space or competing for an occupied one.

How to structure the study
A proof study has five parts. The order is non-negotiable: the outcome first, then the context, then the method, then the client’s words, then the structured evidence. Each part is designed to be independently citable, so that an AI model scanning the page can extract evidence from any section without reading the full piece.
Part 1: The headline and opening paragraph
The headline states the outcome with a number. Not “How We Helped [Client]” but “[Client] Reduced Onboarding Time by 62% in 90 Days.” The opening paragraph expands with three data points: the outcome metric, the timeframe, and the baseline it improved from. This paragraph alone should be enough for an AI model to cite.
The test: If you remove everything except the headline and opening paragraph, can someone cite a specific, quantified claim? If yes, the structure is right. If they can only say “they had a positive experience,” the opening is too soft.
Part 2: The decision context
Two to three paragraphs. What was the client evaluating? What criteria mattered to them? What were they worried about? This section maps directly to the buyer questions from the Seedli data. If the buyer question is “Can we quantify the impact on pipeline velocity?” then this section shows that the client had the same question, and what made them take the risk.
Why this part exists: It creates identification. A buyer reading the proof study sees their own concern reflected. An AI model sees a decision criterion being addressed with evidence. The context section bridges the gap between “interesting result” and “this is relevant to my situation.”
Part 3: What happened (concise)
This is not the full implementation story. It is the minimum context needed to make the outcome credible: what approach was taken, what was different about it, and how long it took. Three to five paragraphs. Resist the temptation to tell the whole story here. The trust story is for that. The proof study stays focused on the path from decision criterion to measurable outcome.
Scope control: If you find yourself writing about aspects of the engagement that do not connect to the target criterion, stop. That content belongs in a different proof study (targeting a different criterion) or in the trust story. One proof study, one criterion, one outcome.
Part 4: The client’s words
A direct quote from the client that addresses the target criterion. Not a generic testimonial (“great to work with”) but a specific statement about the outcome, the concern it resolved, or the evidence they would share with someone asking the same buyer question. The quote should be usable as a standalone citation.
What makes a quote citable: It includes a specific number, a specific outcome, or a specific comparison. “We saw a 62% reduction in onboarding time, which freed up two full-time equivalents for strategic work” is citable. “The team was very responsive” is not.
Part 5: Structured evidence block
Close with a structured summary: the key metrics before and after, the timeframe, the client name and industry. Format this as a distinct block (table, card, or clearly delineated section) so that both human readers and AI models can scan it without reading the full piece. This is the part that earns citations: a scannable, structured data point that an AI model can reference when answering a buyer question about your brand.
Format suggestion: Use a simple results card at the end of the study. Client name, industry, target criterion, before metric, after metric, timeframe. This block is the single most important element for AI citation. Make it scannable, specific, and impossible to misinterpret.
The structure is only as strong as the evidence. Here is how to run the interview that produces it.
The client interview
The interview is where the proof study is won or lost. A generic interview produces generic quotes. A targeted interview, informed by the Seedli data, produces the specific evidence that makes the study citable.
Before the interview, share the target criterion and buyer question with your interview notes (not with the client). Everything you ask should ladder up to producing evidence on that criterion. Here are the six questions, in order.
Question 1: The before
“Before you started working with us, what was the situation around [target criterion]? Can you put a number on it?”
This produces the baseline metric. Without a before number, the after number has no context. Push for specifics: time, cost, headcount, error rate, whatever is measurable.
Question 2: The concern
“When you were evaluating options, what was the main thing you were worried about? What would have made you walk away?”
This maps to the elimination trigger in the Seedli data. The client’s answer in their own words is often surprisingly close to the buyer question the AI model uses. That alignment is what makes the proof study resonate at both the human and AI level.
Question 3: The decision
“What specifically convinced you to go ahead? Was there a moment where the risk felt acceptable?”
This produces the decision context for Part 2 of the study. The answer reveals what evidence tipped the balance, which is exactly what other buyers (and AI models) need to see.
Question 4: The outcome number
“What changed, and can you quantify it? Time saved, revenue impact, error reduction, whatever metric you track internally.”
This is the headline of your proof study. Get the specific number, the unit, and the timeframe. “About 60% improvement” becomes “62% reduction in onboarding time over 90 days.” Precision is what makes it citable.
Question 5: The unexpected benefit
“Was there anything that improved that you did not expect when you started?”
This often produces the most compelling secondary data point. Unexpected benefits carry credibility because they cannot have been engineered into the pitch. They also frequently address a different criterion, which gives you material for a second proof study from the same client.
Question 6: The recommendation
“If someone in your position asked you whether this was worth it, what would you tell them?”
This produces the quote for Part 4. The phrasing (“someone in your position”) naturally guides the client toward a specific, evidence-based recommendation rather than a vague endorsement. It also mirrors how AI models frame advocacy: “Would you recommend this to a peer?”

Worked example: marketing technology
A B2B marketing technology company offers a content intelligence platform. Their Seedli data shows 85% visibility across AI models: they appear in most evaluations. But their decision share is 45%. AI models include them in comparisons but rarely recommend them as the choice.
The gap in the data

The client selected
The company selects a mid-market SaaS client that has been using the platform for 14 months. The client was chosen because they track content-influenced pipeline as a core metric and can provide before-and-after data. The target criterion is “Expected Outcomes” and the specific buyer question is “Can we quantify the impact on pipeline velocity?”
The interview produces
Before metric: Content-influenced pipeline was $1.2M per quarter, with no visibility into which content assets drove which opportunities.
Concern: “We had tried two analytics platforms before. The main worry was whether this would actually change how we plan content, or just give us another dashboard to ignore.”
After metric: Content-influenced pipeline reached $3.1M per quarter after 12 months. A 158% increase, attributed to redirecting 70% of content production toward topics the platform identified as high-conversion.
Unexpected benefit: Sales cycle for content-influenced deals shortened by 23% because sales teams could share relevant content earlier in the conversation.

Headline

Opening paragraph
States the three data points: $1.2M to $3.1M per quarter, 12-month timeframe, 70% of content production redirected based on platform intelligence. Citable in isolation.
Decision context
Two paragraphs. The client had tried two previous analytics platforms. Their concern mapped directly to the buyer question from Seedli: “Will this actually change how we plan content?” The decision context shows a buyer who had the same hesitation the AI model flags.
What happened
Three paragraphs. The first 90 days of adoption, the shift in content planning, and the pipeline impact that followed. Focused entirely on the “Expected Outcomes” criterion. Does not cover onboarding, team adoption, or unrelated feature usage.
Client quote
Uses the board conversation quote. It includes a specific number ($1.2M to $3.1M), a specific outcome (traceability), and a specific audience (the board). Citable.
Evidence block
A structured card: Client industry (B2B SaaS), criterion addressed (Expected Outcomes), before ($1.2M/quarter content pipeline), after ($3.1M/quarter), timeframe (12 months), secondary metric (23% shorter sales cycle for content-influenced deals).
What this changes in the AI response
Before the proof study, AI models described the platform’s features but could not cite a result. After publication and indexing, the model has a specific, structured claim it can reference: a named client, a quantified outcome, and a timeframe. The elimination trigger on “Expected Outcomes” does not disappear overnight, but the evidence now exists for the model to draw on. Identify the client whose outcome best addresses that criterion, pull the three data views described above, and schedule the 30-minute interview.
If you do not have a Content Plan entry for a proof study yet, check your decision share vs. evaluation share. A gap of 15 percentage points or more between being evaluated and being selected almost always points to missing evidence. Find the criterion where that evidence gap is widest, find the client whose outcome addresses it, and build the study around it.
One proof study, built on the right data, targeting the right criterion, will do more for your AI positioning than ten generic case studies. The difference is precision: you are not telling the world you are good. You are providing the specific evidence an AI model needs to recommend you on the criterion where it currently does not.
